Fr. Joe Donnelly, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Southbury, will replace recently deceased priestly dynamo Fr. Philip Cascia as chairman of the board of directors for Waterbury's St. Vincent DePaul Society:Cascia founded the local St. Vincent agency in 1978. It operates the
largest homeless shelter in the state, a soup kitchen and food pantry, a thrift
store and low income housing.
Donnelly said he will continue Cascia's vision
to help the city's less fortunate.
Fr. Joe is one of the two or three most liberal priests in the entire Archdiocese of Hartford. If he were put in charge of, say, liturgical norms for the Archdiocese, it would not be a cause for celebration. But St. Vincent DePaul seems like a good fit for him. And who knows? Perhaps it will leave him less time to encourage his parishioners to join Voice of the Faithful. Up to now parishes under his authority have coincidentally become local focal points for the dissident front group.

I like especially what the anonymous poster suggests about limiting the freedom and duties of dissenters......I find it very disheartening that these things continue to go on right under the nose of various bishops. I don't pretend to know how to solve the problem, but a little more vocal commitment on behalf of the higher-ups would benefit many in the flock along with the dissenters themselves.
Be careful not to confuse a "liberal" with a "dissenter." They are not the same thing. Let us be clear, there are dissenters on both sides of the ideological debate. For example, those Catholics who believe the Mass of Paul VI is illegitimate are "dissenters" just as surely as those Catholics who believe women could be ordained.
Further, be careful using the label "liberal." In the context of the Catholic Church it means something quite different from that which it means in the political context. A faithful and obedient Catholic, for example, fights for and end to BOTH abortion AND the death penalty.
Finally, do not make judgements as to the liturgical preferences of one priest or another without backing it up with significant data that at shows you have some understanding of liturgy. Your comments to not line up with experience. In fact, I have found Joseph Donnelly's liturgies to be more faithful to the Magesterium than any liturgy in which the presider feels the need to add a "Hail Mary" to the Prayers of the Faithful or the Prayer to St. Michael before the Recessional. Neither of which are in the sacramentary.
Having been a member of the Sacred Heart Church community and witnessing first hand the passion and committment that Fr. Joe brings to the faith community here, I am confident that this calling will enhance the lives of those recieving assistance from The St. Vincent DePaul Society. The vitriolic poison spewed in these comments reflects a narrow perspective indeed. Thank God the position was awarded to the right man.

After all- this is the Holy season of Lent-a time of "conversion from sin". May the light of Christ remind us all of our ongoing need for repentance and Christ's light. And in a particular way I pray that God will reveal His light that so clearly shines forth in our Pastor Fr. Joe.
Exactly how is it determined who is a liberal or their degree of liberalism? What is your measurement tool or experience to rate a diocese? What about Father Joe and his priestly ministry is so objectional that you would criticize his appointment to an area such as serving the poor and God's most needy children. It sounds very desparate and an insidious way to share your divisive poison and paranoia. We all serve and respond to our calls to holiness in our own way. Our Church and the saints help us see that those most holy are not one and the same but as a whole create a body that can serve all and include all. Father Joe has brought The Word to life in our parish by liturgy and example. I have no tolerance for this type of attack while there are certainly more pressing issues in our community than who is more worthy or less worthy in serving the poor. Maybe your efforts would be better spent praying for the future of the priesthood instead of trying to take down a man that has served faithfully for 35 years.
I find it revealing that Fr. Donnelly was not familiar with St. Vincent de Paul and all the ministry they offer the poor. The majority of Fr. Donnelly's homilies call us to social justice. Many of us have collected food and money, prepared meals and served at the kitchen, helped clean the shelter, brought food to the pantry. Apparently he has not. Makes me wonder if he practices what he preaches! Lead by example!
I used to go to Sacred Heart until a few months and I have to say anonymous that you are completely wrong. The man is bordering on heresy.
His abuses of the sacraments at times made me sick. I can't even count how many masses that were considered invalid because he didn't do the epiclisis (sp?). I went to reconciliation with him and he said that I wasn't sinning and didn't give me absolution even though I knew that I had sinned.
His homilies are just as bad. He was more inspired by bumper stickers than the inspired Word of God. His homilies had nothing to do with the Scriptures and was just his way to express his political beliefs. Dealing with him for three years was 3 Years too long. I'm sad that St. Vincent DePaul is going to be in the hands of him. I used to volunteer there but after I left Sacred Heart I've been too busy to help out there. I'll pray that they stay open and for a new priest at Sacred Heart. Please pray for the same. I miss all my friends who still go there and everyday I pray that their souls are protected.

You know people; we have The Catechism of the Catholic Church, the G.I.R.M and Magesterium that can be easily referenced to verify what we believe. What about the Just War Doctrine, Women in the Priesthood, Chastity, Abortion, Fetal Stem Cell Research, Euthanasia, Same Sex Marriage, Contraception, Married Priests etc………do we just take for granted what we hear and take it as true teaching? We must encourage one another to take the time to look it up. It isn’t hard and it doesn’t take long and we just might learn something, which is always a good thing isn’t it?

Rather, Sat. a.m. mass is eliminated and in lieu a “Eurchastic” service is put in place where no priest is needed. So what we really, suddenly, got was lots of office space……for what??.........the failing G.I.F.T program (Why are the children’s’ catechism programs now bulging in some neighboring churches? Where are your friends’ children)?? Hmm, or perhaps the unofficial or even official home of CT’s chapter of Voice of the Faithful (VOTF). Unlikely?
VOTF…….sounds like a nice group with a good cause?? After all aren’t we all appalled at the scandals involving homosexual priests and wanting to do more about it? So initially, “Keep the Faith, Change the Church” might not sound like a bad motto. Unfortunately there are always opportunists and sadly things are not always as they seem. How much do you really know about VOTF that you found out on your own?
